Baleia Wines' "Calcarea" blend, connecting the wine's limestone-rich soil (calcareous) to ancient seabed fossils, mirroring the hard-pressed beauty of their terroir and the resilient, calcium-based sponges found there. The wine highlights deep mineral notes in their Syrah-Tempranillo wine.
Baleia is the only winery in the Lower Duivenhoks River district in the Cape South Coast area, the soils having a high calcium content and hence the names of the wines in the top-end Limitados range.
The conglomerated soils provide the ideal struggle for the Syrah grapes resulting in small, concentrated bunches. A gentle approach in the cellar is needed to balance this intensity and showcase the incredibly mineral soils in which this wine is grown, which also means a judicious oaking regime. Only the finest barrels are selected for bottling, adding a touch of exclusivity to this limited production offering
Tasting Notes: A unique fusion of Syrah and Tempranillo creates a bold blend bursting with savoury spice, dark and dried fruits, and hints of Garrigue. The wine features granular tannins, followed by black currant and mineral
undertones, enhanced by a delicate earthy essence reminiscent of the ancient seabeds where our vineyard's
soil originates. This wine pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb, grilled beef and vegetables, duck, and game.
