“Oom Koos gaan see toe!” A grape originating from the wet ‘n green far flung North of Portugal in Monção & Melgaço – where wolves still roam the hillsides & they measure rainfall in metres; now transplanted & thriving in the harsh hamlet of Calitzdorp where rainfall is measure boastfully in single digit millimetres & Cape leopards roam the mountains. Alvarinho enamoured us, but a visit to Soalheiro & tasting their almost 30 iterations of the variety, had us hook, line & sinker!
Only the second vintage crafted from a small block nearby the cellar planted upon “beach sand” along
Klein Riviertjie from which water siphons into the vineyard offering some relief from the heat.
Tasting Notes: Colour reminiscent of a sweet sun-kissed apricot, unfurling with a myriad of stone fruits, peachy yogurt, some honeyed almonds, grippy tannin tug, sea-spray chalky finish & tell-tale Alvarinho terpenes to round it off. Quite complex & beguiling. Enjoy with bountiful servings of fresh seafoods – grilled sardines, calamari or snoek paté on Salti-crax – or enjoy with soft fromage & charcuterie while enjoying another African sunset. Please enjoy lightly chilled & decant.
