Hogan wines was started in 2014 and is a small, family-run business with Jocelyn Hogan Wilson as winemaker. We make our wines in the beautiful Banhoek Valley and source our grapes from various regions of the Western Cape, selecting vineyards suited in terms of climate and soil to the varietals we make.
The Chenin blanc grapes were handpicked in February over two pickings from old, bush vines, planted on decomposed granite from Joubertskloof in Swartland. The vineyard block is irrigated and is east facing which contributes to the favourably low pH. After picking, the grapes were then cooled overnight to 10 degrees celcius and hand-sorted the next day followed by a gentle whole bunch press. No sulphur or any other additions were made to the must at pressing. Natural fermentation took place in 225L and 300L barrels, followed by natural malolactic fermentation, after which the wine received the first sulphur addition. The wine was racked off the gross lees in late November and bottled in December 2024.
Tasting Notes: Fresh fruit (pear, peach, citrus) balanced by savoury, flinty notes, snappy acidity, and subtle oak integration, showcasing a restrained yet complex profile from Swartland granite soils. Beautifully concentrated with textured pear, apple, hint of ginger and a touch of spice. Wonderful complex depth of flavour and freshness
Grapes from two Paardeberg vineyards, planted in 1979 and 1987 respectively. Matured for 10 months in old oak. The nose is detailed and expressive, with notes of pear, peach, citrus, floral perfume, herbs and a touch of flinty reduction. The palate is precise and pure, combining vivid fruit and snappy acidity with a savoury, gently bitter finish. Restrained, lean and effortlessly elegant – picking concluded before the end of January, something that appears to have only aided the wine. Alc: 13%. CE’s rating: 96/100.
