While the Orange River is an area known more for creating bulk wines destined for brandy, Lowerland have achieved something very special here, with a freshness and minerality that is surprising. Lowerland work organically in the vineyard, and in the winery work with natural yeast and old French oak so as to really showcase the terroir.
Tasting Notes: Its an intense, complex character with notes of apricot, peach, and honeysuckle. It is fermented and matured in oak, providing a full-bodied, yet, fresh, and textured palate. Green-tinged, pale-gold. Restrained apricot and peach aromas exploding onto the palate with extraordinary intensity. The stone fruit notes are harmonious and exuberant. Wine still dry, food friendly but persistent
Food Pairing: Best served chilled and pairs well with rich, flavorful dishes like curry, ginger, or apricots. Think Cape Malay or Moroccan Chicken sosaties.
Matured for seven months in fourth-fill barrels. Aromatics of peach, apricot, a touch of honeysuckle and herbs. The palate is dense and yet also possessing plenty of drive – concentrated fruit matched by zippy acidity, the finish savoury. Full of personality and proper vinosity – nothing remotely flabby here. Alc: 13.4%. CE’s rating: 92/100.
