Planted in 1953 out of necessity, when Pinotage planting material was scarce, this Cinsault vineyard has evolved into a symbol of resilience and heritage. Originally part of a larger Pinotage vineyard, these vines now stand alone, bearing witness to over six decades of winemaking tradition.
This is from an old bush vine vineyard on granite and schist soils in Stellenbosch - dryland farmed - it yields tiny amounts of grapes, between 4 and 6 tons per hectare.
Tasting notes: Fresh strawberries and cherries with an underlying cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Fynbos shrub and flora unveil themselves with time in the glass. The wine is fresh and delightfully light of touch on palate, but holding a long and delicious finish.
Food suggestions: Roast pork with herbs and fennel / Rack of venison served medium / Game fish on the grill – we love locally caught yellowtail.
Grapes from 1953 plantings on Bottelary property Bellevue. Matured in old oak for 12 months. Subtle aromatics of red and black berries, fynbos and earth on the nose while the palate has pure fruit and fresh acidity. Understated but not without structure, this has a lovely savoury draw to it. CE’s rating: 94/100.
