Barbera is a native of Piemonte in northern Italy, where it is one of the most widely planted red grapes. At Altydgedacht it is grown on the cool Tygerberg slopes of Durbanville, where Atlantic breezes keep ripening slow and preserve acidity. Oak maturation adds the toasty, spicy layer and softens the grape’s naturally lively structure. The Altydgedacht estate one of the oldest farms in the Cape, established in 1698 and farmed by the Parker family since 1852
The Barbera grapes were hand-picked on 15 March 2022 at 24.5 Balling from dryland vineyards. They were sorted, destalked and crushed into both open and stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation took place in tank before the wine moved to barrel for 12 months of maturation, 20% of it new French oak. It has an ageing potential of roughly five years from vintage.
Tasting Notes: Red fruit leads on the nose, mostly raspberry and sour cherry, with light spicy overtones of nutmeg and clove. The palate opens velvety, rounded off with ripe varietal fruit and a gentle oaky sweetness. Fresh, savoury and easy to enjoy, this is a traditional Northern Italian grape in a food-friendly Cape style.
Food Pairing: This is a wine built for the table. Its bright red fruit and lively acidity suit tomato-based Mediterranean dishes, so think slow-simmered ragu, lasagne, spaghetti pomodoro, wood-fired pizza and aubergine parmigiana. It also works with roast chicken, grilled sausages, mushroom risotto and aged hard cheeses.
