Raoul Beaumont was a true maverick—equally at home among vineyards and motorcycles. His adventurous youth carried him across the globe, often by sailing boat, before he eventually returned to the Cape. In 1974, he and Jayne purchased the historic wine farm Compagnes Drift. Raoul wasted no time in replanting the vineyards, focusing primarily on white cultivars, with smaller plantings of Pinotage and Tinta Barocca.
By the 1990s, his restless curiosity led him to experiment with red varietals such as Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Franc, and Grenache, carefully testing which grapes thrived best on the property. Yet despite his pioneering spirit, Raoul remained grounded. To him, wine was never about glamour or excess. It was simply an essential part of everyday life, cultivated with the humility and practicality of a true farmer.
