A wandering blend that captures the best of the Cape
The Fledge & Co. Vagabond 2023 is a white blend without borders, bringing together exceptional vineyards from across the Western Cape to create a wine that is greater than the sum of its parts. True to its name, "Vagabond" is crafted from a diverse collection of Mediterranean varieties, each contributing its own personality to the final blend. Fruit is sourced from more than a dozen carefully selected vineyard sites, with each parcel vinified separately before spending time in seasoned French oak. After an initial year in barrel, the wine undergoes a second winter of maturation in tank on its fine lees, building texture and harmony while preserving remarkable freshness. This patient, minimal-intervention approach results in a wine of depth, precision and quiet complexity.
Tasting notes: An expressive bouquet of orange blossom, ripe peach and layers of yellow, orange and green citrus is complemented by hints of pineapple, hay, rooibos, almond meal and delicate white spice. The palate is generous yet finely wound, balancing richness with remarkable tension and freshness. A creamy mid-palate gives way to a long, focused finish where citrus, subtle spice and mineral notes linger beautifully. Decanting or serving lightly chilled allows the wine's many layers to unfold.
Food pairing: A beautifully textured white blend that rewards bold flavours and elegant cuisine. Shellfish & seafood: Butter-poached lobster, grilled langoustines or scallops complement the wine's layered texture and vibrant acidity. Pork & poultry: Slow-roasted pork belly or confit duck beautifully match its richness while balancing its freshness. Vegetarian dishes: Charred cauliflower with tahini, roasted fennel or pumpkin ravioli echo the wine's savoury complexity. Asian cuisine: Fragrant dishes featuring lemongrass, ginger and lime, such as Thai seafood curry or miso-glazed black cod, are lifted by the wine's citrus drive and aromatic intensity.
