Where old bush vines meet the cool influence of the ocean
The Fledge & Co. Hoeksteen 2024 pays tribute to Chenin Blanc, once known simply as "Steen", the cornerstone of South Africa's winemaking heritage. Sourced from gnarled old bush vines planted in the early 1980s, the wine combines the concentration that comes with vine age and low yields with the freshness imparted by nearby maritime influences. Crafted in Fledge & Co.'s signature low-intervention style, it is a thoughtful expression of old-vine Chenin that balances texture, energy and purity.
Tasting notes: Expressive aromas of ripe pear, yellow apple and white peach are complemented by subtle citrus blossom and a delicate mineral lift. The palate is textured yet vibrant, revealing layers of stone fruit, quince and citrus, carried by bright natural acidity. A gentle pithy character adds complexity and structure, while the finish is long, clean and quietly savoury, reflecting both the concentration of the old vines and the freshness of the coastal influence.
Food pairing: A beautifully balanced Chenin Blanc that rewards fresh, flavourful cuisine. Seafood & shellfish: Grilled langoustines, pan-seared scallops or mussels in a saffron cream sauce complement the wine's vibrant acidity and layered texture. Pork dishes: Slow-roasted pork belly or grilled pork cutlets with apple relish mirror its ripe orchard fruit and freshness. Cape malay cuisine: Mildly spiced Cape Malay fish curry or bobotie highlight the wine's fruit purity while balancing its bright acidity.
