A Helderberg Chardonnay where maritime freshness meets quiet power
The Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2024 is sourced from a remarkable single vineyard perched 400 metres above sea level on the gravelly slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. Just a short distance from False Bay and the cold Atlantic Ocean, the vineyard enjoys cooling maritime breezes that encourage slow ripening and exceptional natural acidity. The outstanding 2024 vintage allowed the site to express its hallmark balance of concentration, texture and freshness. Whole-bunch pressed and naturally fermented in French oak barrels, the wine remained on its primary lees for a year before a further ten months of maturation in the same barrels. This patient approach results in a Chardonnay of remarkable precision, depth and longevity.
Tasting notes: Lifted aromas of nasturtium, freshly cut lime and citrus blossom lead into a vibrant, finely detailed palate. Crisp yellow stone fruit is complemented by subtle flinty salinity and a beautifully textured mouthfeel. Bright natural acidity provides exceptional focus, while extended lees ageing adds depth and generosity without overshadowing the wine's purity. The finish is long, mineral and effortlessly poised, with the structure to reward careful cellaring for many years.
Food pairing: A refined Chardonnay that pairs beautifully with elegant seafood and richly textured dishes. Grilled Line Fish: Fresh kingklip or kabeljou with lemon butter highlights the wine's citrus freshness and mineral edge. Roast Chicken: Herb-roasted chicken complements its layered texture and vibrant acidity. Lobster: Grilled lobster with drawn butter echoes the wine's richness while maintaining balance. Mature Comté: Nutty alpine cheeses enhance the wine's flinty character and long finish.
