Ekliptika is named after the phenomenon in which the earth, stars and moon align in their orbit with the sun. Both the name and the label illustrate our biodynamic way of farming, and can be seen as a metaphor for when different components come together to create something inexplicably special and unique. This Bordeaux styled red blend is shaped to suit our unique terroir and is composed of the best batches of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Rooted in the oldest viticulture soil in the world, made up of decomposed granite on the lower slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. This vineyard enjoyed the refreshingly cool breezes from False Bay (Atlantic Ocean) during the day and cool air at night flowing down the mountain, resulting in even ripening of the berries and good, natural acidity. The macro climate is maritime, with cold wet winters and sunny warm summers, with the Helderberg Ward being the coolest in the Stellenbosch region. The vineyards are meticulously cared for by hand and the crop is reduced to ensure maximum quality. Biodynamic & Organic practices are followed and therefore no herbicides or chemical sprays were used in the production of these grapes.
The Ekliptika was matured in 70% new and 30% matured French oak barrels for 24 months.
Tasting Notes: The 2020 vintage commands attention with a regal bouquet of mulberries and blackberries, seamlessly entwined with delicate floral perfume, herbal nuances, and the aristocratic mineral whisper of pencil shavings and graphite. On the palate, it unfurls with poised grandeur, full‑bodied yet never ponderous, its velvety texture carrying layers of dark chocolate and warm nutmeg spice, all harmonized by a vibrant natural acidity that tempers its 14.5% alcohol with effortless balance. The tannins are exquisitely sculpted, fine and structural, guiding the wine toward a finish of distinguished length, where savoury undertones and a subtle flicker of dried chilli pepper linger with refined persistence.
Food Pairing: Because of its bold structure, prominent Cabernet Franc character, and savoury undertones, the Ekliptika 2020 finds its finest expression alongside richly robust cuisine, from braised lamb shank with giant white beans or a slow‑roasted rosemary lamb shoulder, to prime cuts of beef such as grilled ribeye or fillet dressed with green peppercorn or truffle‑infused sauce that echo the wine’s wood and spice layers; game dishes like roasted springbok, blesbok, or ostrich steaks with a dark berry reduction highlight its depth, while slow‑cooked duck breast or roasted guinea fowl bring out its savoury elegance; for vegetarian alternatives, portobello mushrooms grilled with garlic and herbs or hearty lentil and vegetable stews in Mediterranean or European styles provide equally rewarding matches, each underscoring the wine’s layered complexity and refined finish.
39% Cabernet Franc, the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Red and black berries plus subtle notes of floral perfume, herbs and pencil shavings. The palate is refined rather than elegant – generous fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins, the finish gently savoury. Already quite open but should mature gracefully over the medium term. Alc: 14.5%. CE’s rating: 94/100.
