A beautifully modern take on South Africa’s signature grape
The Longridge Pinotage 2023 is a refined expression of Pinotage that leans into elegance, freshness and purity rather than power. Grown on the decomposed granite and clay soils of the Helderberg slopes in Stellenbosch, the vineyards benefit from cooling False Bay breezes that allow for slower ripening and excellent natural balance. Longridge follows certified organic and biodynamic farming practices, with meticulous vineyard work done entirely by hand. In the cellar, the wine is naturally fermented using native yeasts, with a portion fermented in small bins and the balance in stainless steel tanks before spending 16 months in French oak barrels. The result is a Pinotage that feels polished, savoury and quietly complex while still remaining vibrant and approachable.
Tasting notes: Deep ruby in colour with expressive aromas of ripe berries, cassis and sweet spice layered alongside notes of sugared orange peel, rooibos and subtle smoky charcuterie. The palate is smooth and well-rounded, showing juicy dark fruit and red berry purity balanced by savoury undertones and gentle oak spice. Fine tannins and fresh acidity keep the wine lifted and energetic, while the finish lingers with earthy complexity and soft spice.
Food pairing: A wonderfully versatile Pinotage that balances richness with freshness. Braaied Lamb Chops: Smoky grilled lamb beautifully complements the wine’s savoury spice and ripe fruit profile. Charcuterie Boards: Cured meats and smoked sausages echo the wine’s subtle smoky and charcuterie notes. Roasted Mushrooms: Wild mushrooms or mushroom risotto mirror the earthy depth and savoury finish. Sticky Pork Belly: The wine’s acidity cuts through richness while its dark fruit pairs effortlessly with sweet glaze and spice.
