A rare, maritime Syrah from the Cape Peninsula, combining wild aromatics, saline freshness and exceptional elegance
Savage Girl Next Door is among Duncan Savage’s most distinctive bottlings and stands as one of South Africa’s most compelling cool‑climate Syrahs. Sourced from two minute parcels on the Cape Peninsula: a 0.38‑hectare vineyard in Fish Hoek planted on sandy gravel and a 0.2‑hectare site in Noordhoek rooted in sandstone. It reflects the maritime influence of the Atlantic Ocean only a few kilometres away. Constant exposure to wind and the cool coastal climate ensures slow ripening, preserving natural acidity and aromatic precision. Grapes are rigorously sorted before spontaneous fermentation in open‑top fermenters and conical foudre, with approximately 50% whole bunch inclusion to heighten lift and savoury complexity. After two weeks on skins, the wine is basket pressed and matured for ten months in foudre and seasoned 500‑litre French oak barrels. The result is a Syrah of striking individuality: floral, peppery, mineral, and unmistakably maritime, finishing with a saline edge that underscores its Cape Peninsula origin.
Tasting notes: The nose is initially restrained and elegant, revealing layers of violet, dark cherry, plum and blackberry alongside black olive, crushed herbs, white pepper and subtle graphite. There is a savoury element reminiscent of cured meat and dried herbs, together with a distinct salty, sea-spray character. The palate is tightly wound and beautifully refined. Dark berry fruit is carried by bright acidity, silky powdery tannins and an unmistakable saline mineral core. White pepper and black olive emerge through the mid-palate, while the finish is long, dry and cool. This is Syrah with precision rather than weight, offering a wonderfully transparent expression of the Cape Peninsula. The 2025 is slightly closed at the moment but has all the promise and aromatic potential expected. Will benefit from many years in bottle.
Food pairing: Ideal with lamb, venison, grilled duck and beautifully cooked steak. It is particularly good with lamb chops rubbed with rosemary and pepper, duck breast with cherry or plum sauce, slow-roasted pork, venison with a berry reduction or grilled ribeye. For vegetarian pairing, try grilled aubergine, mushroom dishes, black olive tapenade, lentil ragù or roasted peppers.
