Cool Climate Syrah
Harvested from the lovely vineyards of Elim on soils varying from shale, gravel and Ferricrete also known as Koffieklip. Minimal intervention throughout the winemaking process created a beautiful cool climate Syrah. After de-stemming the wine fermented naturally in open-top fermenters and benefitted from daily punch-downs. The wine then spent 10 months in partly new and older French oak and was bottled in December 2023. The wine was made in a natural way, with only sulphur additions.
Tasting Notes: Notes of spice, coriander seeds, Indian green peppercorns and juicy red fruit such as Bitou berry with crisp acidity, all neatly integrated with the subtle oak nuances. The palate is medium-bodied with velvety tannins and an umami saline thread weaving through. This is a superbly nuanced Syrah that should age with grace.
Two different Elim sources - The Berrio and Strandvelt - supply the grapes for this savoury cool climate Syrah. The 20% new wood needs a little more time to integrate, but this is an intense red, combining clove, peppercorn and marjoram aromas with a palate of red cherry, blackberry and patisserie spices. 2025-35.
