A beautifully poised Cabernet Franc that showcases the finesse of Stellenbosch
The 2025 vintage marks Lukas van Loggerenberg’s tenth under his own label. A decade shaped by enduring relationships with exceptional old vineyards and the families who have farmed them for generations. Following a cold winter and mild growing season, the harvest unfolded slowly and naturally, allowing each vineyard to be picked at its point of balance. The resulting wines are defined by purity, precision and composure, expressing both the character of the 2025 vintage and Lukas’s deepening understanding of these remarkable sites.
Sourced from two exceptional vineyard parcels in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch, planted in 2004 and 2008 on decomposed granite soils rich in koffieklip. Crafted by Lukas van Loggerenberg, widely regarded as one of South Africa's leading young winemakers, Breton reflects his philosophy of producing elegant, site-driven wines with minimal intervention. Named after the French synonym for Cabernet Franc, the wine is vinified from each vineyard separately before being blended after 11 months in seasoned French oak, resulting in a Cabernet Franc that is refined, expressive and unmistakably Stellenbosch.
Tasting notes: An intensely aromatic nose reveals layers of blackcurrant, red cherry and wild raspberry, intertwined with notes of graphite, dried herbs and delicate floral perfume. The palate is beautifully composed, combining vibrant red and dark berry fruit with savoury spice and a distinctive mineral character. Fine-grained tannins and fresh natural acidity provide structure without heaviness, while the long, focused finish reflects the precision and purity for which Van Loggerenberg Cabernet Franc has become renowned.
Food pairing: A refined Cabernet Franc that rewards elegant, flavour-driven cuisine. Beef: Chargrilled sirloin, beef fillet or côte de boeuf highlight the wine's purity of fruit and finely structured tannins. Lamb: Herb-crusted rack of lamb or slow-roasted shoulder beautifully complements its savoury herbal character. Game: Venison loin or springbok with a blackberry reduction echoes its vibrant fruit and mineral complexity. Vegetarian Dishes: Charred aubergine, wild mushroom pappardelle or lentil ragù mirror the wine's earthy depth and freshness. Hard Cheeses: Mature Comté, aged Cheddar or Gruyère provide a superb match for its elegant structure and lingering finish.
