A family reunion in a glass, bringing Pinotage back to its roots
The Vlok Stamboom Familytree Blend 2022 celebrates one of South Africa's most remarkable wine stories. Pinotage was created in 1925 through the crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, and this blend reunites the family by bringing together the two parent varieties alongside their offspring. Comprising 44% Pinot Noir, 17% Cinsault and 39% Pinotage, Stamboom, meaning "family tree", is a tribute to heritage, lineage and the generations of winemakers who have shaped South African wine. Crafted by Conrad Vlok in Elim, the wine combines the elegance of Pinot Noir, the aromatic lift of Cinsault and the depth of Pinotage into a seamless and expressive blend. The wine is matured in French oak barrels and bottled with minimal intervention, allowing the personality of the fruit and vintage to shine through.
Tasting notes: Bright ruby red in colour with lifted aromas of wild strawberry, cherry and red plum, layered with subtle floral notes and hints of spice. The palate is vibrant and energetic, showing juicy red berry fruit, cranberry and soft savoury undertones. Pinot Noir contributes finesse and structure, Cinsault adds freshness and perfume, while Pinotage brings depth, texture and a gentle earthy complexity. Fine tannins and bright acidity carry through to a balanced, lingering finish that invites another glass.
Food pairing: A wonderfully versatile red blend that is made for sharing around a table. Duck Breast: A classic pairing where the wine's bright fruit complements rich duck and berry-based sauces. Lamb Chops: Grilled lamb with rosemary brings out the depth and structure of the Pinotage component. Roast Chicken: Herb-roasted chicken allows the elegance and freshness of the Pinot Noir and Cinsault to shine.
